What the Scottish Premiership is

The Scottish Premiership is the top division of Scottish football, made up of 12 clubs for the 2026/27 season. It is best known outside Scotland for the Old Firm rivalry between Celtic and Rangers, one of the fiercest derbies anywhere in European football, but the division also features long-established clubs such as Aberdeen, Hibernian and Heart of Midlothian with their own strong followings.

Because the league has only 12 clubs, sides play each other more often than in most European top flights, which keeps rivalries sharp and gives fans several chances each season to attend a given fixture.

Fixtures to know about

The season's early calendar includes the first Old Firm derby of 2026/27, with Celtic hosting Rangers at Celtic Park on Sunday 20 September, traditionally one of the hardest tickets in Scottish football to secure. The same weekend brings Hibernian against Aberdeen at Easter Road, St Johnstone hosting Falkirk at McDiarmid Park, and Dundee taking on Motherwell at Dens Park.

By early October, the fixture list turns over quickly given the division's size: Rangers host Kilmarnock at Ibrox Stadium, Heart of Midlothian face St Mirren at Tynecastle Park, and Falkirk travel to take on Dundee, giving fans several matches within a few weeks to choose from.

Grounds around Scotland

Scottish Premiership stadiums range from Celtic Park in Glasgow, which holds 60,411 and is comfortably the largest ground in the division, to smaller, tightly packed venues that create an intense matchday atmosphere. Rangers play at Ibrox Stadium, with a capacity of 50,817, meaning the two Glasgow grounds between them account for a large share of the league's total capacity.

Elsewhere, Falkirk's home ground and McDiarmid Park in Perth offer a different scale of matchday, with tighter concourses and stands close to the pitch that suit fans who prefer a more intimate setting than the Old Firm grounds provide.

Choosing a fixture

Demand for tickets varies sharply depending on the fixture. Celtic versus Rangers is consistently the most sought-after match in the division, and games involving either Glasgow club against any opponent tend to draw strong interest. Fixtures further down the table, such as those involving St Mirren or Kilmarnock, are generally easier to find tickets for and offer a good introduction to Scottish football for first-time visitors.

This page compares prices for Scottish Premiership tickets across StubHub, Viagogo, Hellotickets, Football Ticket Net, Gigsberg and SportsEvents365, making it straightforward to see how listings for the same fixture differ before deciding where to buy.

Planning a visit

Most Scottish Premiership clubs are based in or around Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee, all connected by regular train services, which makes it possible to combine more than one fixture in a single weekend trip. Glasgow alone is home to both Celtic and Rangers, so a short stay in the city can take in a match at either Celtic Park or Ibrox Stadium depending on the fixture list.
