What the 2026 MLS season involves

MLS, Major League Soccer, is the top professional football league in the United States and Canada, made up of 30 clubs playing a regular season before a playoff format decides who lifts the MLS Cup. Clubs are split across Eastern and Western Conferences, and the closing weeks of the regular season are when playoff positions are settled.

Fixtures to look out for

A full round of MLS fixtures on 19 September 2026 shows the breadth of the league. Columbus Crew travel to Montreal to face CF Montréal at Stade Saputo, while New England Revolution host Orlando City SC at Gillette Stadium.

Elsewhere, Houston Dynamo FC face FC Cincinnati at Shell Energy Stadium, Colorado Rapids host Seattle Sounders FC at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, and D.C. United welcome Charlotte FC to Audi Field. FC Dallas play Austin FC, Minnesota United FC host LA Galaxy, and Sporting Kansas City face Philadelphia Union on the same matchday.

West coast fixtures include San Jose Earthquakes against LAFC at Levi's Stadium, while St. Louis CITY SC take on Toronto FC at Energizer Park.

Clubs to follow this season

Among the 30 clubs in MLS this season are Seattle Sounders FC, Vancouver Whitecaps, Real Salt Lake and Chicago Fire FC, each chasing points across the closing stretch of fixtures before the playoff picture is confirmed.

The league's geographic spread, from Vancouver in the west to Miami in the southeast, means travelling supporters can face long journeys for away fixtures, and matches often draw large crowds at grounds built specifically for football.

Grounds hosting MLS football

MLS clubs play at a wide range of purpose-built and shared stadiums. BC Place in Vancouver, with a capacity of 54,500, is among the largest venues in the league, while smaller, football-specific grounds such as Subaru Park in Chester, TQL Stadium in Cincinnati and Allianz Field in Saint Paul offer more intimate atmospheres.

Other notable venues include Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey, Sporting Park in Kansas City, and Soldier Field in Chicago, giving the league a genuinely varied set of matchday settings across the United States and Canada.

How the season progresses to the MLS Cup

Once the regular season ends, the playoff picture is decided through the Wild Card round, followed by the Playoffs Round One, before the field narrows through the Conference Semi-Finals and Conference Finals to a single MLS Cup Final.
